No matter how well you read, if it all fades within a few days, it's as if you never read it at all. Forgetting is a natural part of how the brain works — a mechanism for keeping the mind uncluttered. But without the right method, that same natural mechanism turns into an enemy: skipping review means information gets erased, shallow note-taking leaves only a faint trace, and reading without visualization means building no hook for memory at all.
German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus showed, decades ago, that our minds start erasing information almost the instant we learn it — a process known as the "forgetting curve." Under this curve, up to 70% of material is gone within a day, only a faint trace remains after a week, and after a month it's as if you never read it. But here's the gold: every review flattens the curve a little more — like driving a nail into wood, each strike sets it deeper.
To stand against this curve, there are three key weapons: timed review (right after learning, then after 24 hours, a week, a month), active note-taking (rewrite summaries in your own words instead of copying the book's sentences), and mental visualization (turn the material into an image or story so the brain stores it across more networks).
Forgetting isn't the enemy — it's just a reminder that the brain needs "smart repetition." Fold review into a small daily routine, and information takes root like a seed watered again and again. Short but regular review always beats long, scattered review — and with this method, what once vanished like smoke from your mind becomes a solid pillar in long-term memory.
